However, for many women, trans and non-binary people (women+), breaking into this field can seem daunting, to say the least. We could talk about reasons all day – from technical to societal challenges- but we’ll pick solutions for today.

This is where coding bootcamps, particularly part-time ones, come into play. These camps, including yours, have been gaining immense popularity (rightfully so) for their practicality and accessibility.

As someone who has navigated the twists and turns of the tech industry for years, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities of learning to code later in life or alongside other responsibilities.

In today’s article, I’ll tell you all about the viability of these bootcamps and discuss whether they’re worth the investment for YOU.

1. What are Part-Time Coding Bootcamps?

First, let me make sure we’re all on the same page about these bootcamps.

Part-time coding bootcamps are structured training programs that teach coding and programming skills outside traditional full-time educational settings. These bootcamps offer a flexible approach to learning that allows you, the student, to continue with their day-to-day commitments.

The duration of these programs can vary widely, generally lasting from 6 to 24 months, depending on the intensity and the curriculum covered. The time commitment can also differ but usually involves spending 10 to 20 hours per week on coursework, projects, and coding exercises.

Mostly, classes for part-time coding bootcamps are held online in the evening or during weekends to accommodate the students.

2. Can You Learn to Code Part-Time?

Learning to code part-time is not only possible but quite common among those seeking new career opportunities or wanting to enhance their skills without giving up their current job or life commitments.

Coding bootcamps, particularly part-time ones, have proven to be a practical solution for many women+ across the globe.

According to the 2022 Coding Bootcamp Market Sizing Report, part-time bootcamp enrollment has significantly risen, indicating a growing acceptance and demand for flexible learning schedules.

The report also forecasted that the coding bootcamp market will increase by 1.39 billion euros at a CAGR of 19.77% between 2022 and 2027.

That said, like most good things in life, it won’t be easy. Learning to code and program as a beginner requires focus, commitment and lots of practice.

Depending on the program’s focus, our students in part-time coding bootcamps can expect to gain foundational to advanced knowledge in various programming languages such as JavaScript and Python.

Are You Guaranteed a Job After Coding Bootcamp?

According to a 2021 survey by Course Report, about 79% of coding bootcamp graduates in the US found employment within six months of graduation, with many landing roles in web development, data analysis, and more.

The tech job market in Europe is burgeoning, with a particular demand for software developers and data scientists. A report from the European Commission notes a shortage of ICT professionals across the EU, indicating strong job prospects for coding bootcamp graduates.

Similarly, in the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 22% growth in software development jobs from 2020 to 2030, significantly faster than the average for all occupations.

However, securing a job post-bootcamp also depends on several factors, including the reputation of the bootcamp, the individual’s networking efforts, the geographic job market, and the specific tech skills employers seek.

In addition to technical skills, employers highly value soft skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability, which are often emphasized in bootcamp curriculums.

Full-Time Bootcamps typically run Monday through Friday, with hours that mimic a full-time job (e.g., 9 AM to 5 PM). This immersive environment is designed to help you acquire skills as rapidly as possible. It’s suitable for women+ who can dedicate much of their time exclusively to learning.

Part-Time Bootcamps, on the other hand, are structured to accommodate students who cannot commit to a full-time schedule. These programs often hold classes in the evenings or on weekends, requiring 10-20 hours of commitment per week. This allows students to continue working or managing other personal responsibilities.

B. Learning Pace and Interaction

Full-Time Bootcamps offer a fast-paced learning environment where students quickly cover and apply topics to practical projects. This intensity can be beneficial for complete immersion and rapid results.

Part-Time Bootcamps provide a slower pace, which is better for those who prefer to take more time to absorb complex information. The extended duration of these programs also allows for prolonged exposure to the material, which may enhance long-term retention.

C. Cost and Financial Investment

Full-time Bootcamps often require a higher financial investment upfront due to their comprehensive nature and shorter duration. This can be a significant consideration for those without the financial flexibility to stop working.

Part-Time Bootcamps tend to be comparatively less expensive upfront and allow students to maintain their income, making them financially viable for a broader range of individuals.

D. Outcome and Career Transition

Full-Time Bootcamps are typically geared towards rapid job readiness. Graduates are prepared to enter the job market quickly, often with job placement services as part of the bootcamp.

Part-Time Bootcamps may take longer to complete, but they still offer robust career services and job preparation. The longer duration can provide more time for networking and exploring potential career paths within the tech industry.

4. Challenges of Part-Time Coding Bootcamps

Okay, we’ve been talking about the advantages of part-time bootcamps for a while. However, as with everything else, it has some challenges as well.

Balancing the demands of the bootcamp with work and personal responsibilities is a big challenge. It requires time management skills and can sometimes lead to stress and burnout if not managed properly.

Part-time bootcamps typically extend over a longer period than full-time programs. This prolonged duration can sometimes affect motivation, as the extended time commitment may lead to fatigue and a decrease in enthusiasm.

Although, our women+ students do a great job of bypassing this challenge. We encourage you to take a little time out of your schedule every day to practice. This turns the challenge into an advantage and helps you retain the previous week’s lesson much better.

Although part-time bootcamps offer flexibility, they may provide fewer networking opportunities than full-time programs.

Networking is crucial in the tech industry, and the intensive cohort experience of full-time bootcamps often fosters a stronger sense of community and professional connections.

So, what does this mean for you? Are part-time bootcamps hard to manage? The answer will change depending on who you ask. But then again, good things in life are seldom easy.
